Protecting your car from thieves could be as simple as etching a vehicle identification number on the window. And, the Dallas Police Department will do it for free during a neighborhood event 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 21 in the Lowe’s parking lot at Forest and Inwood.

Schreiber Crime Watch hosted the event last year, and the DPD put VIN etchings on 57 vehicles. Car dealers typically charge $250-$300 for the service.

The VIN etchings increase the odds of finding a stolen car. And, to get rid of the etchings, thieves must break all the windows of the car, making it nearly impossible to sell. The DPD keeps detailed records of all cars with a VIN.

So, mark your calendars now. About 10 officers will be on duty during the event, and each etching takes about 6 to 8 minutes. Arrive early to ensure your car gets one. Last year, they had to turn people away as lines got too long.
