The National Urban Debate League tournament brought the top two teams from 20 leagues across the country to compete in New York City April 16-17, and four neighborhood students represented the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance.

Hillcrest High School seniors Andrew Flores and Carlos Ramirez along with W.T. White High School juniors Joseph Reyes and Luke Strother spent the weekend meeting other students and being recruited by universities. In the end, Reyes and Strother ranked ninth and ended the tournament as octo-finalists.

Strother says of his experience, “ By Saturday, I had friends from Baltimore, Kansas City, Atlanta, Oakland, Nashville, St. Louis, and Los Angeles … Meeting all these people from around the country and discovering how much we had in common reminded me that debate is a community, one that can be a gateway to unique opportunities.”

Congratulations, guys.
