Preston Road has a new identity. Well, sort of.

The two-mile stretch between Northwest Highway and Royal Lane was designated as Harold C. Simmons Memorial Highway. Because it’s only an honorary designation, its official name will not change. (For the record, Preston Road actually is part of State Highway 289.)

Simmons, who died in 2013 at age 82, was an entrepreneur worth roughly $10 billion. He was known for his philanthropic endeavors, according to Forbes, as well as his massive campaign contributions to Republican candidates.

D Magazine seems to think Simmons’ politics motivated Rep. Morgan Meyer, Rep. Cindy Burkett and Sen. Donald Huffiness to pursue the honorary designation.
