A Dallas ISD magnet school will open in Bluffview by 2019.

Sudie Williams Elementary is being converted to a Talented and Gifted Vanguard academy for students in grades 4-8. Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted 9-0 to approve its transformation at Thursday night’s meeting.

Although Sudie Williams meets state standards and offers a deaf education program, roughly 850 children who live in the Bluffview area attend private or charter schools. That, coupled with the gentrification of a nearby apartment complex, left the school under capacity.

“While there are still lingering concerns about this program, I think it’s an unfortunate situation, and we’re all doing the best we can,” Preston Hollow trustee Dustin Marshall said.

Students currently enrolled at the neighborhood school will transfer to K.B. Polk Elementary, which already offers a Vanguard program for fourth- and fifth-graders.
