• The most intriguing Texas pioneers: The Hamon Arts Library at SMU has a fascinating and under-publicized exhibit: “Texas Women Artists: Selections from Bywaters Special Collections” through August 5. Each woman represented in the exhibition had early art training. The first artist shown is Louise Heuser Wueste (Wüste), a “pioneer” since she is the first known professionally-trained woman artist to arrive in Texas in the mid-nineteenth century.
  • Listen to a storyteller: Singer and songwriter Gary Nicholson performs Friday at 8 p.m. at Uncle Calvin’s, $15 to $18. He has written and co-written 600 compositions. That’s a heck of a lotta writing.
  • Try being a do-gooder. Volunteer for an anti-bullying program at the Anti-Leaf Diner from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
  • Fingerprint for fun. The Preston-Royal Branch Library holds an event for kids 6 to 11 to learn about the magic behind fingerprinting. The event occurs on Sunday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Preston Royal Auditorium.
  • Do a spin class and donate to charity at the same time. Soul Cycle Preston Hollow’s charity ride’s proceeds go to Turtle Creek Chorale on Sunday from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
  • Meet a photographer. Leonard Volk, a photographer for more than 60 years, talks about his photography and essay book at Interabang Books, Tuesday, July 31 at 7 p.m.
