Last week, District 13 Council member Gay Donnell Willis announced she’ll be running for reelection in the Dallas City Council election on May 6.

One other candidate, Priscilla E. Shacklett, will be running against the incumbent Willis. Shacklett has work experience as a manager, program, systems analyst and administrative services.

Shacklett is a first-time candidate with no previous political experience. Willis announced her candidacy in her email newsletter Thursday, Feb. 16, and Shacklett filed her candidacy papers with the Dallas City Secretary that same day.

“Bringing neighborhood-focused leadership to City Hall is my passion, and it’s been an honor to serve and get to know so many of you in the last couple of years,” Willis shared in the newsletter.

Shacklett officially announced her campaign on Candy’s Dirt in a special contributor post.

“I’m coming in fresh and ready to dig into where the city’s money is and where it’s going,” Shacklett wrote in the post.

She was born and raised in California and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and education from the University of Colorado.

Willis was first elected in June 2021 and was previously President and CEO of the Turtle Creek Conservancy.
