NASA TechRise Student Challenge.

Two teams from the Dallas/Fort Worth area: Hockaday School in Dallas and Reedy High School in Frisco,  won the national NASA TechRise Student Challenge.

TechRise is a STEM completion for 6th to 12th-grade students at public, private or charter schools that offers hands-on experience in science, technology, math and engineering and the opportunity to test their own solutions for space exploration and the study of Earth. This is the second year of this competition and is administered by Future Engineers.

This year’s challenge was to design a science or technology experiment that could be tested on a NASA- sponsored high- altitude balloon flight. The challenge is designed to inspire a deeper understanding of Earth’s atmosphere, surface features, and climate, as well as space exploration, coding, electronics, and the value of test data.

Now the students work the remainder of the school year building their experiments with the support of professional engineers, to prepare for a high-altitude balloon flight test take takes place this summer. The Hockaday School team’s experiment will test Flora Ad Astra.

There were 60 winning teams from students across the country and each team is receiving $1,500 to build out their experiments, a flight box, technical support from Future Engineers, and an assigned spot on the high-altitude balloon flight.

TechRise is one of many NASA prizes and challenges that offers opportunities to participate in America’s space program
