Kimberly Akimbo, the musical about a girl with a life-shortening genetic condition and dysfunctional family, had major wins at the 2023 Tony Awards.
The musical took home five awards for the following: best actress, best featured actress, best musical book and best original musical score, best musical and best performance by a leading actress.
Victoria Clark, star of the musical and a Hockaday School grad, was awarded best leading actress in a musical for her role as Kimberly Akimbo. Four other actresses were nominated in the category for best leading actress in a musical, including Annaliegh Ashford, Sara Bareilles, Lorna Courtney and Micaela Diamond.
The Tony Awards almost didn’t happen due to “the ongoing screenwriters’ strike,” according to The New York Times.
