Congratulations, District 1 families! Another successful year at Dallas ISD is coming to an end. I want to thank our outstanding students, teachers, campus staff members, campus leadership, and families for all the hard work throughout the past year.

I also want to thank our communities for their trust in supporting our bond work to make sure our infrastructure mirrors the quality teaching we pride ourselves in, giving students in every neighborhood a level playing field to learn. This includes the buildings at TJ and Walnut Hill International Leadership Academy, which we had the opportunity to reopen this year, and other projects planned for the coming months and years, including Marcus Leadership Academy, DeGolyer Elementary, and the Career Institute North.

One academic calendar

Before you enjoy your summer, remember that all schools will return to operate under the same academic calendar for the next school year. The first day of school for all campuses will be August 14. Please remember to check www.dallasisd.org and the district’s social media for updates and registration events as we approach the beginning of the school year.

Summer in Dallas ISD

During June and July, Dallas ISD schools will offer a variety of free options for students to accelerate learning while participating in fun, hands-on activities. As part of the district’s free summer school programs, students can connect with their friends, engage in learning, and improve their social and emotional well-being. To learn more, visit www.dallasisd.org/summerlearning.

The district’s Food and Child Nutrition Services will also provide its yearly summer meal program to ensure nourishment for all students during the break. Starting June 5, select Dallas ISD schools began serving meals on-site Monday through Thursday. To learn more about the locations, visit www.dallasisd.org/fcns. During this time, we invite children under 18 and those up to 21 years old with disabilities to enjoy healthy meals at no cost.

Congratulations are in order

Each of our graduating seniors has a unique story worth sharing, but I would like to give a special mention to Hamersen B., a new graduate of W.T. White High School who will be attending West Point to study pre-med, with the dream of becoming a surgeon and traveling the world. Four years ago, he arrived from his native Ethiopia to our country speaking only Afaan Oromoo and Amharic, but thanks to the inspiration of his JROTC instructor, Major Nebyou Yonas–who coincidentally grew up in the same village as Hamersen–he is now headed to the most prestigious military academy in the country. You can learn more about his story at thehub.dallasisd.org.
