The Korean Society of Dallas and Greater Dallas Korean American Chamber of Commerce met with elected officials to celebrate the Koreatown Dallas designation at the future site of the city’s first H Mart.

The event on Aug. 11 highlighted the new Koreatown designation and the redevelopment of the vacant building that will soon become Dallas’ first H MART location at 2534 Royal Lane.

Earlier this year, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law unanimously the approval to designate the part of the city as Koreatown Dallas for a 10-year period. Koreatown Dallas is nestled between Luna Road and Harry Hines Boulevard and has been home to the largest Korean-American population in Texas for years.

According to development plans, the city council approved a $4 million economic development incentive to support the project and construction is expected to start construction by Jan. 2024 and be finished by Dec. 2025. H Mart will invest over $28 million for renovations and improvements of the building.

H MART is the largest U.S.-based Asian supermarket chain that specializes in Asian and American groceries and housewares. It has over 97 stores across the nation, with six in Texas. The two-story building will have 70,000 square feet of retail space.
