Landmark’s Inwood Theatre and GDA Speakers will host an advanced screening of “Society of the Snow” on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6:30 p.m., with the premiere scheduled for Friday, Dec. 22.

Director J.A. Bayona’s latest film depicts the rugby team that survived in the Andes Mountains for 72 days in 1972 after a plane crash. Bayona’s previous works include “The Impossible,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Orphanage.” The movie premiered on Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival and has since garnered awards and nominations.

Hosted by Dallas-based GDA Speakers, the event features keynote speaker Nando Parrado, who will share his friends’ survival story, along with U.S Ambassador to Uruguay Ken George and survivor of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, Dr. Beck Weathers.

“I am most excited about the authenticity that director J.A. Bayona used in making this film. The actors are from Uruguay, Argentina, and Spain. Each actor is the same age as the person they are portraying,” said GDA president and founder, Gail Davis. “Nando and his wife, Veronique, are close friends of mine, and they have seen it several times. I can tell by their descriptions we are in for a real treat. And of course, the Oscar nominations from Spain and the Golden Globe nominations are huge.”

The movie will be released on the 51st anniversary of the exact day the survivors’ plane crashed on December 22, 1972. “Society of the Snow” chronicles the rugby team’s time in the frozen Andes Mountains after their Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 went down. Shot in chronological order, the film provides a detailed, accurate, genuine and emotional account of the survivors’ journey.

The movie will continue showing at Landmark’s Inwood Theatre through Dec. 28 and will be available to stream worldwide on Netflix on Jan. 4, 2024.
