Welcome to a new year at Dallas ISD. I hope you had an opportunity to rest over the winter break and are ready for the exciting opportunities for all of us in the months ahead.

I want to begin by inviting everyone to a community meeting at Thomas Jefferson High School, where officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be present to discuss the dangers of the drug fentanyl in our community. As many of you have heard, this is an increasing problem in our country that we have been fortunate to have avoided in our school district, but we must always remain vigilant. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18. I hope to see you there.

2024 STEM Expo

On Saturday, Feb. 3, we invite district families to participate in Dallas ISD’s 2024 STEM Expo. This year the event will be held in person at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for students and families to engage in over 100 fun and academic experiences, with hands-on exhibits in science, technology, engineering, and math. To register and find more information, visit www.dallasisd.org/stem.

January is Board Recognition Month

During School Board Appreciation Month, I want to recognize my fellow members on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees. As trustees, our responsibility is to enhance public schools and act as a connection between the community and the district. It is a privilege to work with my colleagues on the board to improve the well-being and education of our students at Dallas ISD!

Deadline to apply to Choice Schools

Don’t forget that the application period for the district’s choice programs will be open until Jan. 31. Dallas ISD’s true school choice allows families to find the perfect educational fit for their child with over 100 choice options and programs. Visit www.dallasisd.org/choosedallasisd for more information about our academic offerings and find the best-fit school for your child.

Congratulations to SOC

Finally, I want to congratulate the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears for reaching the UIL football State Final last month. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Coach Todd and his players remain an inspiration for everyone in Dallas ISD. SOC’s great run demonstrates that public education can provide robust programs and amazing opportunities for all students.
