The fire station at Royal Lane, which was originally destroyed by the 2019 tornado, is finally ready and will hold an opening ceremony for its new facility on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.

The new station, which officially went online on Jan. 31, is now operational and accommodates both an engine and a rescue unit. Since 2019, the crew has operated out of a temporary station across the street at 5807 Royal Lane. The new facility is located at 5920 Royal Lane.

The opening comes as an early and welcome surprise with the last update promising an end-of-the-year completion.

In the aftermath of the tornado, driver David Leos discovered a collection of letters from residents amidst the debris. These letters now adorn the walls of the updated station, serving as a tribute to Leos, Dallas Fire Rescue’s only line-of-duty COVID-19 death.

The City continues to gather critical items and cookware for the crews. Councilmember Gay Donnell Willis has compiled a wishlist for the first responders and urges community support.
