The Dallas Park and Recreation Department will break ground on the city’s first inground skate park at Bachman Lake.

The groundbreaking, set for Thursday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m., will feature attendees such as Mayor Eric Johnson, councilmember Omar Narvaez, Arun Agarwal, president of the Dallas Parks and Recreation Board, Dallas Park and Recreation Department director John Jenkins, and Dallas Park and Recreation Board District 6 representative Tim Dickey.

This new skate park will be the city’s first concrete inground facility and its first large-scale, professionally designed skateboarding space. The $3.9 million project, funded through the 2017 bond program, spans 46,000 square feet and will include a medium-sized flow bowl, street plaza area, snake run and a pool.

Designed by Team Paine, a company with over 30 years of experience and over 200 skate park designs to its name, the Bachman Lake Skate Park aims to become a historical destination recognized worldwide. Its CEO and lead designer, Tim Payne, has provided a variety of private training facilities for industry companies and televised media events like the X-Games, MTV’s Jackass Productions, MTV Sports & Music Festivals and several other accolades.

“It’s with high hopes that the community in Dallas makes the Bachman Skate Park a historical destination that’s recognized throughout the world,” said Payne. “We designed the area to be really long so it captures a lot of tricks that can be performed back-to-back.”

In the 1980s, Bachman Lake received national attention for its pinball-lighted clown ramp and blue ramp, which were popular with skaters. The new skate park is already being anticipated as Dallas’ return as a skating destination, organizers said.

This project marks the city’s second outdoor skating facility, following Lakeland Hills Skate Park.

Bachman Lake Skate Park is projected to be completed around December 2024.
