As we reach the final stretch of the 2021-2022 school year, we are finally able to leave the pandemic behind. There is still very hard work ahead of us to recover the unfinished learning of the past two years. However, I am confident that over the past school year, we have set up the foundations to achieve this task.
On May 27 & 28, join us to celebrate the graduation of our seniors from Thomas Jefferson and W.T. White high schools. During their high school years, these students have had to adapt and overcome the challenges of the pandemic, and now they deserve the opportunity to celebrate with their families and friends. Congratulations!
Ahead of next school year, I would like to remind everyone that enrollment is open, and please don’t wait until the last minute. For families who need assistance with the enrollment process, please go to one of our ONE Centers across the District or visit www.dallasisd.org/enroll.
Celebrate Asian American and Mental Health Awareness month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month. Throughout the month, Dallas ISD will share a series of engaging interviews and activities celebrating the impact of the history and culture of AAPI students, teachers and staff in our district.
The month of May is also Mental Health Awareness month, and the District is working to ensure that all students who need mental health support have access. To better help identify students in need of aid/assistance over the next three years, the Mental Health Services department will deploy a new depression screening tool, using funds provided by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the federal ESSER program.
Gooch groundbreaking
On May 26, join me for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Tom C. Gooch Elementary School. The school is undergoing a $9.68 million makeover, including additions and renovations to the existing campus. The school will have a new secure vestibule, a renovated cafeteria, updated landscaping and more.
This is part of the ongoing bond improvement efforts in Dallas ISD. These school improvements are the result of a close collaboration between the District and the families they will serve. Through several meetings, both virtual and in person, our community has been able to provide input on what the resulting schools will look like.
Distinguished District 1 moment
Congratulations to Arlo West, a kindergarten student at DeGolyer Elementary school, who won the Dallas ISD 2022 STEM Expo Coding Competition, “Virtually Making a Difference,” in January and got his prize earlier this month for his project to help save polar bears. Arlo received cheers and support from his teacher and classmates during an event to showcase the results of our partnership with Amazon and BootUp to promote computer literacy.
