Hillcrest students show their support for Romeo Hernandez at last Friday’s football game: Team Romeo Facebook page

Romeo Hernandez, a junior at Hillcrest High School, is once again fighting Ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer that affects about 200 Americans every year.

Earlier this year, the high school student was diagnosed with the rare cancer. In response, friends, teachers and family created the website, “Team Romeo,” a fundraising and support group to help with financial and moral support.

In August, after several months of chemo and radiation treatment, Hernandez was featured in a Fox News segment for “kicking cancer’s butt” after being declared cancer-free. Since then he has been back at school, participating in the Hillcrest percussion band and earning honor roll status.

Last Tuesday, however, doctors detected that the rare form of cancer had returned after performing a biopsy on Hernandez’ knee. UT Southwestern doctors are currently working to treat the cancer so that Hernandez can return to school.

Keep up with Hernandez’ battle and learn how you can help on the Team Romeo Facebook page.
