Neighbor Jessica Nowitzki talks about husband Dirk Nowitzki’s 21st season

Preston Hollow neighbor Jessica Nowitzki, wife of Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Dirk Nowitzki, doesn’t know yet what the future holds for her husband, but says they’re enjoying every step of the way.

In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, Jessica Nowitzki said she, along with the couple’s three children Malaika, 5, Max, 4, and Morris, 2, have enjoyed the ride that has been Dirk Nowitzki’s 21st season in Dallas. The kids even got to travel to see dad play live for the first time ever this season.

“They’re excited,” Jessica Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News. “When they go to the games and see their dad play, it’s exciting for a while. And then we need to get some popcorn to keep them busy. But Max, he can watch an entire game. He’s really into it.”

The Mavericks organization announced that this week will be a celebration in honor of the 40-year-old German player that will engulf the season’s last home and away game. Since no one knows the answer to whether Dirk Nowitzki will return for another season, the organization and fans are treating this one like his last.

Even the government has gotten involved. Last week, Dallas County Commissioners declared April the Month of Dirk, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Jessica Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News she is grateful for the love Dallas is showing her husband.

“I think it was a moment, kind of a flash, of what’s to come,” she said. “A lot of emotions, with the season winding down and 21 years in Dallas. I think he’s just done so much for the community and the city’s just embraced him that I think it’s beautiful that he’s receiving such great love from everyone.”

During the season, Dirk Nowitzki surpassed Wilt Chamberlain to become the No. 6 scorer in NBA history. He also broke the record for most seasons played for only one franchise.

The Mavericks will play their final game at home at 7:30 p.m. April 9 against the Phoenix Suns. The team’s last game of the season will be at 7 p.m. April 10 against the San Antonio Spurs.
