One week ago, Preston Hollow neighbor Victor Vescovo had quite the day. The Guinness Book of World Records and HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel both featured Vescovo, with Guinness declaring him as the “first person to visit the oceans’ deepest points.”

However, more is coming for Vescovo. A book based upon The Five Deeps Expedition, Vescovo’s initiative, is being released on Tuesday. It is written by Josh Young and titled Expedition Deep Ocean: The First Descent to the Bottom of All Five Oceans.

Vescovo, who is 54, is a retired naval officer and resident of Preston Hollow. An avid explorer, he started The Five Deeps Expedition in an effort to explore all five of Earth’s oceans. With the help of his team, the efforts to reach the bottom of each ocean were completed in August 2019.

In an interview, Vescovo told Guinness that the idea to visit the bottom of each ocean started when he learned that only one had been fully explored. He wanted to change that.

“I thought, what a great adventure it would be to build the machines and undertake the journey to finally see that through,” Vescovo revealed to Guinness.

Vescovo and his team achieved the deepest crew dive of all time, and Vescovo received credit for achieving the deepest solo crewed dive. His solo dives were conducted on April 28 and May 1, 2019.

Beyond the HBO feature, world records and book, the dives are expected to be depicted in a five-part Discovery Channel series called “Expedition: Deep Planet” in early 2021.
