St. Mark’s School of Texas hosted The Thorpe Cup, an international decathlon and heptathlon competition with teams from the United States and Germany, this weekend.

Fourteen athletes, seven from the U.S. and seven from Germany, competed in decathlon and heptathlon on July 9 and 10. The decathlon consists of a 100-meter race, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter race, 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500-meter race. The heptathlon consists of 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter race, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter race.

Athletes received points based on their performances in each of the events, and the top five men’s and three women’s scores were added to determine team winners.

Many members of the U.S. team pulled firsts over the weekend, including Austin West, who came in first overall, in the 100-meter dash, men’s long jump, and 400-meter dash. Jack Flood, who came in third overall, also brought in firsts in the high jump, pole vault, and 110-meter hurdles.

The women’s team also pulled firsts, with Chari Hawkins coming in first overall, as well as first in 100-meter hurdles and shot put. Melanie Winters, Erin Marsh, Callie Jones and Sara Glidden also won first in the 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run, respectfully.

These wins bring in the 11th-straight team title over Germany for the United States.
